Surviving the friendly skies alone with toddlers

I love my family. They are my best friends and I love to spend time with them. Unfortunately for me, I live in Texas, a minimum of two flights and one layover away. While I am always so happy to be home, the journey is typically dreadful. I'm sure whoever came up with "Fly the Friendly Skies" has never flown alone with 2 toddlers. Traveling as an adult isn't all that fun, add 2 toddlers under 3 and the fun factor quickly spirals down to zero. While it isn't ideal, it is better than a 40 hour drive, so as I pack and prepare for another solo trip to visit my family with both kiddos, here are some things that really seem to help our trips go better.

1. Get to the airport at least 1 hour before you would flying alone:
Everything takes longer with kids: security, bathroom stops, even just walking to the gate. Being rushed makes it so much worse.

2. Check it. All of it.
I HATE checking bags, they always get lost. But when I travel alone with my kids I check everything. Cheapness aside, it is not feasible to wheel my bag, push the stroller and make sure one or both kids doesn't run away.

3. Only bring what can fit under or on the stroller comfortably:
This insures I have 2 free hands at all times to grab a running child, push the stroller and do heaven knows what else. Also, only carry on bags that fit easily under the seat. It is a huge pain to get things out of overhead bins when you have a one year old attempting to escape. And of course Pumpkin is going to spill something when the fasten seatbelt sign is on and I can't get the wipes.

4. If you have assigned seats, board at the last possible minute:
This way, my kids only have to sit on the plane for the shortest time possible and aren't fussy before we've even pulled out from the gate. (If I am traveling with someone else, one of us actually boards early, and gets everything situated, with the other bringing the kids on last minute).

5. Eat or suck during takeoff / landing:
Make sure the kiddos are either eating or sucking during takeoff and landing to avoid ear problems.

6. Check your bulky diaper bag / purse, and bring a backpack on the plane:
I can wear the backpack, carry Bub, and hold Pumpkin's hand, all while fitting down those crazy narrow rows. In my backpack I pack diapers (1 for every 2 hours en route, and an extra pair of underwear for Pumpkin), wipes (an entire pack, to clean up messes and wipe bums), 2 shirts and one bottom for each kiddo and an extra shirt for me ... you never know. In this bag I also have 3 plastic bags for dirty clothes, binkies and a muslin wrap in case it is freezing on the plane.

7. Leave toys, books etc at home.
I subscribe to the theory that less is more when it comes to toys / books. My kids attention spans are non-existent, so instead of bringing heavy books and toys, I bring 4 crayons (who really needs 10 anyway, they only have 2 hands each), cheap sticker books from the target $1 section and a couple stacks of post-its. Seriously, post-its entertain my kids for a long time. All of this goes in the backpack.

The cheaper the better, Targets $1 aisle usually has a few good options.
8. Food. More is more.
While less is more when it comes to toys, for food I am completely opposite. I really believe most problems can be solved (at least temporarily) by a snack or a nap, so I never go anywhere without food and lots of it. I pack each child a full lunchbox with all foods they can feed themselves. Examples include, PB sandwiches, goldfish, grapes, bananas, cherry tomatoes, carrots, snap peas, peppers, cheese sticks. I also bring 2 identical sippy cups (no fighting), 2 bibs and a small dish towel to wipe up any spills / messes. I pack the food into Pumpkin's school backpack, and she wears it on and off the plane. She loves helping and it helps give me an extra arm to carry Bub (and makes my backpack lighter, score).

9. Trump card: Fruit snacks, applesauce packets and dum dums.
These I hide in the bottom of the backpack and use for when Bub wants to run around the plane.

10. Final Trump card: my iPhone.
In a perfect world we would all read stories, practice letters, sing kumbaya and be happy the entire 4 hours of both flights. But in my world, one or both of my kids will be upset about something, and when that happens, sometimes the only thing that will make it better is that stupid Cat (My Talking Tom). Because of this, I make sure my phone is fully charged before we leave and I try to get a few new games for Pumpkin to play. Bub is still too little to really understand, so I just bring an old iPod so he can hold something and feel included.

11. It's only XX hours (in my case 8):
It seems like an eternity, but thankfully there is an end time, and even if both kids cry hysterically or puke or refuse to nap or whatever, there is an end time and you will likely never see any of these people again.

And at the end of it I get to be home :)

Bunny Love

I love summer, but after all this heat I am so ready for Fall to get here. I love light layers and when the leaves change. This Penny Dress from Ryder & Rhenn is to die for and making me even more excited for the seasons to change!

The attention to detail is amazing and I am in love with the buttons and front pleats! Pumpkin loves anything animal related and this was no exception as she hopped everywhere since she was obviously a bunny :)

My favorite fall staple are definitely these 3/4 raglans. Perfect for our not all that cool weather (Houston doesn't really start cooling down until mid October unfortunately).

This "Best Life Ever" raglan will definitely be a fall staple over here. It is so soft, and I love how its just a little warmer, but not hot. I especially love the pop of color with the sun.

Bub approved, his life is made better every day when treats are involved :)

This brand is also momma driven, and Nic is just darling. I loved getting a little look into her life, and growing up on a farm in Idaho (I raised 2 pigs) love that she has a little farm of her own! I would love to have chickens, though I'm quite certain my husband and city would both disapprove :(. Here is a little more about Ryder & Rhenn:

Why did you decide to start your business?

In one word, Ryder. I have worked in Labor and delivery for over ten years and loved it, couldn't imagine anything more wonderful....and then Ryder was born. After the standard maternity leave, I took on the painful hurdle as a mother of going back to work, leaving baby for the first time, the tearful car ride, and the unrealistic fear that my baby just couldn't survive with me. It was awful! The thing I enjoyed most just couldn't compete with my little baby. I worked full time for a year and even though everyone said that it would, it just never got any easier. I was desperate for a creative outlet that I could "work from home" and build. Now Ryder is my best co-worker! The ladies at our local Post Office get mad at me when I come and don't bring him with, it's pretty spectacular!

What inspired your brand name?

Ryder & Rhenn were our baby names when I was pregnant with Ryder! We didn't find out the gender of our little guy so we had one each picked out and I had to use both in the company name.  I guess there is no going back now if we ever are lucky enough to have a little girl!

Any advice or lessoned learned from your experience?

Oh my gosh, you don't have enough time! I've made every mistake in the book and I'm not done yet! I'm just now (barely) getting confidence to just make what I believe in, and not be so worried about if people will like it, hate it, or think I'm crazy. There is so much fear and excitement when I put something new out, it's unreal. There have been many things that I haven't yet gotten the courage to put out just because I'm so worried everyone will hate it. I've also made the mistake of listing way more inventory than my real life can handle and having really long ship times :( That one I'm the least proud of, and am working the most on!

What are some of your goals for the year?

Expanding the brand for sure. You will see an expansion of clothing options and designs and we will be putting extra effort into our Adventure Blankets as well. We have some really great designs on the cusp of coming out for F/W 14' and are already starting some Spring 15'  brainstorming (That's another thing I've learned is this business has you thinking 6 months in advance all the time!). Our biggest goal for this year though is to grow our family, so you might see my baby fever translating into some great tiny baby products!

If you could have any superpower what would it be?

Oh goodness is there a super power that allows you to actually get everything done in a day?! My son would love it if I could fly though so let's go with that!

What's something about you that most people don’t know?

I kind of live on a small farm! We have 2 Pig's, 6 chickens, and goats on the way. I grew up as a major city girl in Southern California so this fun farm life is hard for a lot of my oldest friends to believe, when they call me up and we are canning or collecting eggs they just laugh!

I just love these pieces, and I too wish I could have a super power to get everything done in a day! Wouldn't we all :) Also, Nic has offered a special discount, for the next 48 hours use code: PUMPKINLOVE for 15% off of your entire purchase!! Hurry, and grab these and more sweet clothes for your littles (including some pretty sweet mixed tape leggings ... we might need) over at  Ryder & Rhenn now!!

Bed time routine

We've changed up our nighttime routine a little, we now watch Sesame Street right after dinner and then have a dance party in the spare bedroom to work out extra energy before bath time and bed. These kids are hilarious and it is so much fun watching them dance around, giggle hysterically and love on each other. Couldn't hope for much more.

Seriously this kid is crazy. Such a climber.

Our go-to day trip

I don't know what the weather is like for yall, but here it is HOT. Like sweating just getting out of the car hot. With this heat (and the insane amounts of mosquitos right now), I've been trying to find indoor activities to pass the time. And while they do love to paint, recently, both my kids have been in LOVE with the zoo. Like I'll eat my vegetables if we can go in love. It's all they ever ask to do. So, in the heat, we've been going a lot more lately.

They both are big fans of Dunkin, the baby elephant and watching the baths is generally our first stop.

After the elephants, we make our way to the petting zoo where they can brush the goats, harass the chickens and Bub can love on the cows (he's obsessed).

Our zoo trips are not complete however without a ride on the carousel. Thank goodness it only $1.25 to ride, as they would throw a huge fit if we didn't ride it. Every. Single. Time.

Watching his sister on the carousel.

Because it is so unbearably hot, we've been exploring the indoor air conditioned exhibits a lot more. Our current favorite is the Tropical Bird House. Bub loves all the birds and gets so excited when they fly around.

And what's a trip without a family selfie. 3 out of 4 smiling isn't that bad :)

Yep ... Pretty Much ...

I die. I am beyond in love with this. "You're pretty much my favorite of all time in the history of ever." I mean seriously. I cannot get enough of it.

These tees by Kate&jAMES are seriously some of my new favorites. A new clothing line based out of the Pacific Northwest (near home, I am jealous!!), this duo have so many sweet and fun designs for your littles.

Both designs we received are printed on super soft AA tri blend tees (my favorite, they are so soft and wash up so well). I love the pop of yellow on the Lemons make Lemonade tee. I also love how both designs are completely unisex so we can wear them double!!

He is currently obsessed with cows and mooing.

Seriously, just perfect. But enough from me, how about some info from the ladies behind the brand:

Why did you decide to start your business?

We launched Kate&JAMES June 2014. Katie and I have been friends for almost 25 years and both have a love for being creative. We both have always wanted to screen print our own designs on tees so after chatting about it for months, Kate&JAMES was created to channel our love for all things rad, fresh, and creative.

What inspired your brand name?

I call Katie Kate and I'm Jayme and she calls me James, so, Kate&jAMES. :)

Any advice or lessoned learned from your experience?

So far we have been received really well, beyond our expectations! We have gotten to see some of the coolest IG kids in our Tees and have LOVED every minute of this journey for the past two months. We have learned to go at our own pace, that even tho we have TONS of ideas and want to just produce MILLIONS of different garments, styles, etc ... We realize we are still just starting out :)

What are some of your goals for the year?

Our Goals for the year are to keep growing! Keep selling rad tees and keep getting the word out there!! We hope to be able to expand our designs and our product lines. We just introduced infant tees, which we are excited about as well as we are launching our Fall/Winter designs sometime end of Sept.

What is your dream vacation spot?

Since we are from the PAC NW, we would probably both say somewhere hot & tropical.

Head on over to Kate&jAMES to pick up a few of these tees for your littles, and that Don't give up the ship? I mean, so rad.

Wild + Bear

When two amazing powerhouse mommas join forces, you know the end result is going to be amazing. This is what has happened with the creation of Wild + Bear, the collaboration of two of my favorite IG shops @shopthewildthings + @bestdressedbear.

As can be expected, they did not disappoint with their first release. Printed on super soft AA tees, I am loving our All Good Things Are Wild and Free tee.

Make sure you check out their IG feed to get your preorder in, it closes Monday the 4th at 12 noon EST. You will not be disappointed.

Cupcakes

It's amazing how fast happy and giddy deteriorates into tantrums and insanity. She was so happy until she found out she in fact was not going to be able to eat all the cupcakes lol.
